What is the National Kidney Exchange Program?

It is a program that facilitates kidney exchanges between families of individuals in need of kidney transplants, aiming to find compatible donors within a wider community circle. The program enables organ exchanges between two or more families in cases where a living donor’s kidney is not compatible with their intended recipient.

One of the reasons for the shortage of kidney donors is blood type incompatibility or the presence of antibodies in many kidney failure patients that react against donor tissues, making it difficult to find a matching donor and prolonging their wait for a kidney transplant, sometimes for years.

Objective of the Program:

  • To find a more compatible living donor for the patient by sharing donor lists among transplant centers.

  • The Kidney Exchange Program has proven effective in specialized hospitals within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on a limited scale. Through the national program, the search for a matching donor is expanded to all kidney transplant centers across various regions of the Kingdom.
